Celebrated for its exceptional breadth, depth, and quality, the Barnes Foundation's art collection includes works by some of the greatest European and American masters of impressionism, post-impressionism, and early modern art, as well as African sculpture, Pennsylvania German decorative arts, Native American textiles, metalwork, and more.

Founder Albert C. Barnes arranged and rearranged his collections in “ensembles,” distinctive wall compositions organized according to formal principles of light, line, color, and space, rather than by chronology, nationality, style, or genre. The ensembles changed as Barnes made acquisitions and new aesthetic connections between the works. Integrating art and craft, and objects from across cultures and periods, Barnes sought to demonstrate the continuity of artistic traditions and the universalism of human expression.

This application explores individual works as well as the ensembles and includes interviews with curators and scholars at the Barnes Foundation and elsewhere. A family tour encourages children and their families to interact by considering the ways in which the objects in the ensembles relate to one another; the role of play or leisure in various objects; and the interaction of music and visual art.

Titanic Belfast, an unbelievable, unmissable experience. Located in the heart of Belfast, right beside the historic site of this world-famous ship’s construction, Titanic Belfast is the World’s Largest Titanic Visitor Experience. Housed in an iconic, 6-floor building, this state-of-the-art visitor experience tells the story of the Titanic, from her conception in Belfast in the early 1900s, through her construction and launch, to her famous maiden voyage and subsequent place in history.

Leonardo da Vinci’s masterwork The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne, restored with the aid of the C2RMF (Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France), is the centerpiece of an exceptional exhibition that reunites all surviving related works for the first time.

Compositional sketches, preparatory drawings, landscape studies and the National Gallery of London’s magnificent cartoon are brought together for the first time since the artist’s death to illustrate his lengthy meditation and expose the succession of solutions he had envisioned.

Heinrich Kuehn and His American Circle: Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen

This is the first New York museum show to focus on Heinrich Kuehn (1866-1944), an often overlooked but central figure in turn-of-the-century art circles, whose photographs were exhibited at the Vienna Secession. Born into a wealthy family in Dresden, Kuehn was a member of Vienna’s Camera Club and strove to elevate photography to an art form.

Heinrich Kuehn and His American Circle: Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen features over 100 photographs by Kuehn and also works by Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) and Edward Steichen (1879-1973). Under the influence of the American photographers, Kuehn shifted from making large landscapes taken under dramatic lighting conditions and focused more on scenes of daily life shot under normal light. He also began creating intimate studio and open-air studies of family and close friends, frequently photographed using clothes especially made for these occasions.

This application includes audio that features interviews with the exhibition’s curator, Monika Faber, director of the Photoinstitut Bonartes, and commentary from the director of the Neue Galerie New York, Renée Price.
